Introduction to Amazon WorkMail and its use cases

In this recipe, we will learn about Amazon WorkMail. We will also learn about the use cases of Amazon WorkMail.

Recipe Objective - Introduction to Amazon WorkMail and its use cases?

The Amazon WorkMail is a widely used service and is defined as a managed, secure corporate email and calendar service that works with existing desktop and mobile email clients. Users may access their email, contacts, and calendars using any client programme that supports the IMAP protocol, including Microsoft Outlook, native iOS and Android email apps, any client application that supports the IMAP protocol, or directly through a web browser using Amazon WorkMail. Users can link Amazon WorkMail with their current corporate directory, utilise email journaling to satisfy compliance needs, and manage both the encryption keys and the storage location for their data. Users may also utilise the Amazon WorkMail SDK to set up the interoperability with Microsoft Exchange Server and programmatically manage users, groups, and resources. Amazon WorkMail is also defined as a secure and managed corporate email and calendar solution for existing AWS users. It lets the user access their email, contacts, and calendar using their preferred client programme. Microsoft Outlook, native iOS and Android email programmes, as well as client applications that use the IMAP protocol, or directly through a web browser, are all examples of this. The user can compile Amazon WorkMail with the current corporate directory, utilising email journaling, to fulfil the compliance requirement. Furthermore, the user has control over both the encryption keys and the storage location for the data. The AWS WorkMail SDK allows users to manage users, groups, and resources using applications.

Benefits of Amazon WorkMail

  • The Amazon WorkMail makes managing users' business email infrastructure simple and avoids the need for upfront licencing and provisioning costs associated with on-premises email servers. There is no need to install or maintain complicated software, and there is no need to handle hardware. All fixes, backups, and updates are handled automatically by Amazon WorkMail and thus it's a managed service. Using the AWS Key Management Service, Amazon WorkMail automatically encrypts all user's data at rest with encryption keys they control (KMS). Users may also choose the AWS region where all of the user's data is kept, giving them complete control over data localization and thus offering enterprise-grade security. On both Windows and Mac OS X, Amazon WorkMail includes native compatibility for Microsoft Outlook, allowing customers to continue using their existing email client without having to install any extra software, such as Microsoft Outlook plug-ins and thus it is Microsoft Outlook compatible. iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, and Windows Phone users may synchronise their mails. Users' mobile devices can immediately connect to Amazon WorkMail if they're migrating from an on-premises Microsoft Exchange server, with no end-user reconfiguration and no change in user experience. Users may also access their email, calendar, and contacts using a feature-rich web client and thus it provides anywhere accessibility. Users may access their mailboxes with their current credentials thanks to Amazon WorkMail's secure integration with Microsoft Active Directory. This also makes using common systems administration tools like Active Directory Users and Computers to manage users and groups easier and thus it provides an active user directory.

Use cases of Amazon WorkMail

    • It provides free migration alternatives

Amazon has teamed up with email migration experts Audrina and Transcend to make moving your email to Amazon WorkMail as simple as possible. Email, meetings, contacts, and notes may now be migrated from Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Exchange Server, Google Apps for Work, IMAP, and POP* using these solutions. Audriga offers a self-service email migration solution that allows users to move from their current email system to Amazon WorkMail without having to install any software. It connects to their Amazon WorkMail accounts using conventional protocols and transfers their data directly to them. Emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes are all migrated using audriga.

    • It has a use case of Microsoft Outlook compatibility

The Amazon WorkMail provides native compatibility for Microsoft Outlook, allowing users to continue using their existing email client without having to install any extra software, such as Microsoft Outlook plug-ins on Windows and Mac OS X. All of the complex Microsoft Outlook features that users customers rely on, such as free/busy scheduling, delegation, and out-of-office answers, are supported by Amazon WorkMail.

    • It offers a use case of enterprise-grade security

Using the AWS Key Management Service, Amazon WorkMail automatically encrypts all of uses data at rest with encryption keys they control. Users may also choose the AWS region where all of their data is kept, giving them complete control over data localization. SSL encryption is used to encrypt all data while it is in transit.

    • It provides active directory integration

Users can use the AWS Directory Service AD Connector to connect their existing Microsoft Active Directory to Amazon WorkMail, or run AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory Enterprise Edition ("Microsoft AD"), so they don't have to manage users in two places and users can continue to use their existing Microsoft Active Directory credentials. Users may also have Amazon WorkMail construct and administer a Simple AD directory for them, and users will be added to that directory when they join their Amazon WorkMail organisation.
