Recipe Objective
String or character datatype is constructed by specifying any value in double quotes or single quotes. String manipulation in R include Concatenation, formatting the style, Changing the case and Extracting parts of a string.
If you need to calculate the number of characters in the string we use nchar() function. It counts the spaces in the string too.
This recipe demonstrates how to use nchar() function.
Syntax:
nchar(x)
where: x = any character vector
It returns the number of characters in a vector.
Example:
# assigning strings value to three variables
y = "fellow human"
# using nchar() function
print(nchar(y))
[1] 12
