What is a switch operator in R?

This recipe explains what is a switch operator in R

Recipe Objective

switch() function is used to test an expression against all the elements of the list. The value calculated by the expression when matched with an item in the list, then the corresponding item is returned.

Syntax:

switch(expression, case1, case2, case3...)

where case1, case2 ... are the items in the list.

Case 1: Where Expression gives a numeric value

Here, numeric value matches with the item in the list and returns the corresponding list item

switch(3, "Raj", 1, "Neil", 2)

'Neil'

Case 2: Where Expression gives a string value

In this case, string value matches with the item and returns the Item's value

switch("Raj", "Raj" = 1, "Neil" = 2)
