This year let’s listen to our world leaders and take a pledge to learn “How to Code”. The US President, Barrack Obama urges everyone to learn coding - from the school level to working professionals. “Learn to Code” is the best resolution this New Year – which will be easy for you to keep. Want to make 2016 an awesome year for yourself, understand why you should learn to code now!
Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs once said - “I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.”
90% of the schools in US do not provide computer science coding classes. 600,000 high paying technology jobs in US remained unfilled in 2015 due to shortage of computer science skilled personnel.
2016 is just a month old but it is shaping up to be pretty awesome year with Obama’s announcement on “Computer Science for All” initiative. With shortage of expert programmers in the US, Obama has encouraged investments of $135 million in NSF and CNCS to train computer science teachers, $100 million has been promised directly to districts, in the next budget, for training computer science teachers and $4 billion funding for states. Obama’s new initiative “Computer Science for All” will offer every student the opportunity to learn computer programming through hands-on experience and make them job-ready from Day 1.
At Computer Science Education Week in 2013, Barack Obama said- “Don’t just buy a new video game. Make one. Don’t just download the latest app. Help design it. Don’t just play on your phone. Program it. No one is born a computer scientist, but with a little hard work and some math and science, just about anyone can become one. … Just give it a shot.” Today with the “Computer Science for All” initiative Obama is urging young minds to learn coding.
By end of 2018, 51% of all the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) jobs will be in the computer science related field. With computer science based jobs increasing to more than 1 million by end of 2020- it is the need of the hour to learn programming. Coding languages like Python, Java, C++, Ruby, R, HTML5 are the backbone of the interconnected world. Regardless of the career choice of an individual, it is important to understand and learn at least one of these programming languages as they are the building blocks of the digital era. Individuals might not be using these languages to talk with foreigners on a flight, say, but these languages are at the core of marketing functions, analysis of data, developing web applications, developing mobile apps, etc. It is ok if you do not learn French, German or Spanish but if you can learn compuuter programming in one of the programming language - it is enough to communicate with programmers across the globe.
Everyone Wins – thanks to the “Computer Science for All” Initiative by Obama
Career in computer science technology is exciting, fun, lucrative and is the most sought-after career in today’s digital economy. “Computer Science for All” by Obama is intended to make this a reality by ensuring that everyone gets an opportunity to learn how to code at all levels.
Should every child learn to code even if he/she does not want to become an engineer? We live in an era where we don’t spend a minute without technology and it is equally important for everyone to learn how a website operates on the web or how an algorithm works.
Even if an individual does not go on to pursue a complete computer science degree in future - the problem solving skills learnt in computer science will translate to his/her workplace. This initiative will help individuals become job-ready, with good thinking capabilities, so that they are aware of all the job opportunities that they are eligible for. Expanding one’s skill into programming will allow people to have more options open to them and hopefully avoid unemployment in case of economic meltdown.
Professionals who are already into computer science related jobs should continuously thrive to upgrade their skills by learning about trending technologies like big data, business analytics, data science, CRM systems, etc. to fill in the available jobs that are opening up in the market.
Today’s biggest success stories are IT innovations. Microsoft, Amazon. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are all a product of their founder’s love for programming. Facebook changed how we connect with the world, Amazon changed the way we shop, Microsoft changed the market for PC’s and startups like AirBnB, Redfin, Expedia and Zillow are changing the future of US economy. Yahoo’s current CEO, Marissa Ann Mayer’s career took a drastic change with just one programming class that she had opted for at her university. Had she not attended the programming class at her university, today she would be a Maths Professor at a university instead of the CEO of one of the biggest tech giants. Every individual might not want to pursue career as a programmer but being able to code is an appreciated and worthy skill for anyone.
