To accelerate the field of Data Science, the National Science Foundation has established awards totaling $5million to set up hubs for data science. Covering all the 50 states, more than 250 organizations and Fortune 500 companies have committed to expand this field over time.

UK Budget Airlines, EasyJet, creates its first Data Science Role. November 17, 2015. Research-Live.com

EasyJet, the UK based budget airlines has appointed their first head of data science, Alberto Rey-Villaverde to build artificial intelligence applications. Their theory is that AI will help them improve flight schedules, fleet reliability, in-flight food and drink choice and the airline’s new Flight Club loyalty programme. The data science and AI team will be working with a data pool such as the 170 million items of food and drink carried annually across all of its flights or the 1.3 billion searches on easyJet.com in the past 12 months.

James Crawford, founder and CEO of Orbital Insight, has predicted that technologies like drone imagery, commercial satellites, cell phones and artificial intelligence is producing more data that represents the current social trends. A pair of Columbia University data scientists, have created, what is known as the first therapeutic venom database in the world. VenomKB takes the results of 5117 studies in medical science which describes the effects of poisonous venoms to treat diseases like cancer, obesity, etc. VenomKB documents over 42,000 effects on the human body.
