issue with permission access to make dfs directories

Hi All,

I had to re-install cloudera on my work computer yesterday in order to work on the MapReduce jobs, and suddenly today I keep getting the following error, which will not allow me to create necessary directories.

mkdir: Permission denied: user=cloudera, access=WRITE, inode="/":hdfs:supergroup:drwxr-xr-x

Any and all help with this would be very helpful!

Thanks so much in advance.

sudo -u hdfs hadoop fs -mkdir
In cloudera manager, you can change the settings: hdfs->configuration->view&edit, uncheck the Check HDFS Permissions dfs.permissions and restart the hdfs.

hadoop fs -mkdir /user/cloudera ; hadoop fs -chmod 777 /user/cloudera

Hi Edgar, I really appreciate the help. Unfortunately nothing seemed to work, and I'm still being denied access to directory writes on the hdfs. I'm guessing there is a deeper issue here that I'm not able to understand. Thanks for your help!

hi Joseph,

You are trying to create the directory under the "/" root location and users other than "root" cannot create files or directories under this location. Please remove the "/" from the command things will work as

hadoop dfs -mkdir wordcount (This will create the directory in hdfs location of /user/cloudera/wordcount)
