We've been using CDH3 which was having hadoop1.x and CDH4 has hadoop2.x packages. In the real world its tough to install all the compatible packages and when the hadoop adminstrator wants to upgrade any of the packages it will be a nightmare.

All the companies generally got for a solution like Cloudera, Hortonworks or Mapr. Hence we are using Cloudera to teach the entire course. Also for the student it's very easy to get started without breaking there head on installing all the various components and tools.

If you are interested, you can install hadoop . We have provided documents related to hadoop installation.

I installed it from scratch but you may want to double check CDH3. It gives you hadoop 0.20 not 1.x. The instructor made it clear that we should use 1.x. The link I provided in my original post details what is in every version of CDH, NONE of them use hadoop 1.x
