Looks like the hdfs service is down. Open Firefox in the VM, click the "cloudera manager" on the bookmark menu, login with cloudera/cloudera. This will take you to "All services" page . Check status of "hdfs" service and select "restart" from the drop-down menu. Once the service is restarted , execute the command and check (hadoop fs -ls )

Thanks for the response , it worked in CDH4 , for CDH3 it seemed the image file was corrupted , so I again used a newer CDH3 image and then VM worked well , only thing is I lost the work which was there earlier :(
