Why do we have 2 stock markets - BSE & NSE, when only one can serve all purposes ?

There are thousand of securities available in the market and they need some market to trade on. Most of them are only traded in one exchange , whereas some are on both. The exchange just gives the flexibility to investors, traders to buy/sell securities. Logically there is no such difference when you buy/sell from BSE or NSE
