Hadoop HBase is a real time, open source, column oriented, distributed database written in Java. HBase is modelled after Google’s BigTable and represents a key value column family store. It is built on top of Apache Hadoop and Zookeeper.
HBase runs on top of HDFS to provide Hadoop with similar capabilities like Bigtable – it provides fault tolerant method for storing massive amounts of sparse data sets for big data use cases. HBase is sensitive to the loss of its master node. HBase does not support structured query language unlike relational data stores. Every table in HBase has a column defined as its primary and any calls made to access the tables use this primary key.
