Explain the features of AWS Database Migration Service

In this recipe, we will learn about AWS Database Migration Service. We will also learn about the features of AWS Database Migration Service..

Recipe Objective - Explain the features of AWS Database Migration Service?

The AWS Database Migration Service is widely used and is defined as a service that enables users to swiftly and securely transfer databases to AWS. During the migration, the source database remains fully operational, minimising downtime for database-dependent applications. Users' data can be moved between commercial and open-source databases using the AWS Database Migration Service. AWS Database Migration Service enables both homogeneous migrations, such as from Oracle to Oracle and heterogeneous migrations, such as from Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server to Amazon Aurora. Users may also use AWS Database Migration Service to continuously duplicate data from any supported source to any supported target with low latency. A DMS task can be configured for either a one-time migration or ongoing replication. The user's source and target databases are kept in sync by a continuous replication process. The ongoing replication operation will apply source modifications to the destination with minimal latency after it is set up. For each replication activity, all DMS functions, such as data validation and transformations, are available. The Amazon Web Services Database Migration Service is extremely resilient and self–healing. The source and target databases, network connectivity, and replication instance are all constantly monitored. If the procedure is interrupted, it immediately restarts and resumes the migration from where it left off. By allowing additional replication instances, the Multi-AZ option provides high availability for database migration and ongoing data replication.

Benefits of AWS Database Migration Service

  • The AWS Database Migration Service is very user-friendly. There are no drivers or software to install, and in most circumstances, no changes to the source database are required. With only a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, users can start a database migration. DMS maintains all aspects of the migration process once it has begun, including automatically replicating data changes that occur in the source database during the conversion. With the same ease, users may utilise this service for continuous data replication and thus it's simple to use. The AWS Database Migration Service assists users in migrating their databases to AWS with little downtime. During the migration, any data updates to the source database are continually replicated to the target, allowing the source database to remain fully operational during the process. The target database will remain synchronised with the source database for as long as they want once the database migration is complete, allowing users to swap over the database whenever users want and thus it supports minimal downtime. AWS Database Migration Service may move users' data between the most popular commercial and free source databases. It can perform homogeneous migrations, such as from Oracle to Oracle, as well as heterogeneous migrations, such as from Oracle to Amazon Aurora. Migrations can be made from on-premises databases to Amazon RDS or Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), from EC2 databases to RDS, and vice versa, as well as from one RDS database to another RDS database. It also can transfer data between SQL, NoSQL, and text-based endpoints and thus it supports various databases.

System Requirements

  • Any Operating System(Mac, Windows, Linux)

This recipe explains AWS Database Migration Service and the features of AWS Database Migration Service.

Features of AWS Database Migration Service

    • It creates a migration plan in hours rather than weeks.

Automate the creation of database and analytics inventories, analyse them, and design a personalised migration plan in a matter of hours rather than weeks or months.

    • It reduces the costs of migration planning and workload migration.

By automating the inventory and relocation preparation, users can save money on pricey migration consultants and third-party technologies. With only a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, you can get started.

    • It identifies databases that can be migrated at a large scale with little effort.

Discover and analyse database and analytics server fleets to identify suitable AWS migration targets and quickly transfer users' fleet to the cloud.
