What is use of chainer functions

This recipe explains what is use of chainer functions

Recipe Objective - What is use of chainer.functions?

In the chainer.functions package, Chainer includes a number of built-in function implementations. Typically, these functions return a Variable object or a tuple of Variable objects. If you don't need the gradient, you can send an N-dimensional array as a Variable parameter to a function. Scalar arguments are also supported by some functions.

# Importing necessary libraries
import chainer
import numpy
from chainer import function_node
# Creating chainer variable
x = chainer.Variable(numpy.arange(5, dtype=numpy.int32))
x

Output - variable([0, 1, 2, 3, 4])

# Sum function
chainer.functions.sum(x.data.astype(numpy.float))

Output - variable(10.)

# Mean function
chainer.functions.mean(x.data.astype(numpy.float), axis=None, weights=None, keepdims=False)

Output - variable(2.)
